Welcome to Crafting Crossfit Mom

A little about me

Welcome and thank you for stopping by my little space to share the things that I enjoy and have become passionate about. We are an Active Duty Military blended family of five. I am a Wife (to Lucas), Mother of 3 (Lily, Ross the Boss and Charlotte) and work at home Mama. Over the summer we transferred to Massachusetts from Northern California. This will be our first experience living on the East Coast and we're looking forward to exploring this side of the country! This blog originally started as a little space to share my fitness journey. Over time, my vision has adjusted.....I am looking forward to sharing all the new and exciting things that I have become passionate about.

Fitness

I have been athletic for the majority of my life. I played recreational sports (soccer, softball and volleyball) and I was a competitive figure skater.  I started my crossfit journey in January 2013, one year after my third child was born. Crossfit has changed my life in numerous ways which I hope to share with you in a future post. I am currently taking a break from crossfit to go to physical therapy for a hip injury and can't wait to heal and get back into the gym. I love fitness of all different methods from yoga, running (I started doing 5k/10k races), lifting weights in a traditional gym and crossfit gym and at home work outs. I look forward to sharing my journey of healing and my "come back" to strength and conditioning training!

Healthy Living

Finding Crossfit in 2013 was a big catalyst to many changes personally and for my families health and wellness. The first phase of this transition started a few months after I started Crossfit. I started by changing our nutrition, becoming label conscious and learning more about where and how the foods we eat are grown or produced so that we could make healthier choices. The second phase of my (our families) health and wellness journey started about a year and a half ago by beginning to transition away from conventional person care and house hold products. I look forward to sharing more about my experiences with cooking, meal prep, clean beauty, non-toxic personal care, Essential Oils and non toxic household products with you.

Crafting/Home Decor

I absolutely love Pinterest and have more projects pinned and saved on my Pinterest Boards than I care to admit (follow my Pinterest Boards here). During the summer we transferred from Massachusetts. We had the opportunity to purchase our first home here, which we are so grateful and excited about. I are so excited to have the opportunity (within reason) to have the opportunity to decorate and execute all the decor and DIY projects I have been dreaming about. Like many people, I have fallen in love with the show fixer upper on HGTV (I am so sad that season 5 is their last season). We dream of the idea that Chip and Joanna Gains would one day renovate a home for us. Many of my projects will be farm house inspired combined with a little New England/Cape Cod charm.

Bullet Proof Coffee

Bullet Proof Coffee has been around for quite some time and is a very popular way of making your coffee currently. I had to finally see what all the buzz was about.

So I did what I usually do.....I searched Pinterest and found a few different ways to make this amazing coffee and butter combination.

When I first heard about putting butter in your coffee I thought it sounded so bizarre! Why butter? You just throw butter in and whip it up? After my Pinterest research was done the number one consistent thing I found is this.....You can't just use any old butter that you find on a grocery store shelf. In order to get the quality positive fats that bullet proof coffee can provide you must use grass fed butter.

Cows that are grass fed produce different types of fats than cows that are not grass fed. Grass fed products have positive health benefitting awesome positive fats! So you must use grass fed butter.

I decided to also use coconut oil and coconut sugar. Other recipes I found recommend stevia and organiz maple syrup or coco powder to sweeten things up. I cut down on the butter portion compared to other recipes I was looking at. The first time I tried it using the recommended measurements it was way too heavy for my stomach to handle. So I cut the serving down in what was turned into my final recipe.

Here is my journey making bullet proof coffee. Lol and truthfully as you're about to see it didn't go smoothly.

You will need the ingredients above:

1 Tablespoon grass fed butter
1/2 tablespoon coconut oil
1 tablespoon coconut sugar

Put all of your ingredients into your blender cup. Brew your coffee. I brew 10oz of coffee.

LOL and the next step would be to blend it all together!! As you can see.....blending didn't go as smoothly as I would have liked. I typically use a ninja blender....but my mom was getting rid of her nutrobullet and this was the first time I used it! I blended it and it all came leaking out! I have no idea why lol and my us and tested it afterward with water in it and no leaks! Soooo my theory is that maybe it was because the liquid was hot? I will try again tomorrow and see what happens.....

Despite my blended blunder....I still managed to save a good portion of my delicious bullet proof coffee creation! It's delicious, creamy and just a tad bit of sweetness

Starbucks "Sick Tea" secret menu recipe remake

Tis the season for cold and flu season! I stumbled upon Starbucks secret menus "sick tea" during a conversation about cold remedies during a group discussion at my Crossfit gym. One of my friends at the gym was suffering from a nasty cough and said he was drinking Starbucks "sick tea" to feel better.

A few weeks I was feeling a bit run down so I decided to give it a try my self. Went through Starbucks drive through and ordered a grande "sick tea". When I got to the window to pay I asked what ingredients were used to make "sick tea". It sounded pretty simple. I ended up ordering a few more of this "sick teas" through out that week. It has now turned into my favorite tea combinations to drink even when I'm feeling well. I tend to drink this at night when I want to relax because it is caffeine free.

I realized I was paying a lot of money for a drink I could easily make my self so I decided to search for Starbucks sick tea on Pinterest and came across the secret menu recipe.

You can find the pin I used to replicate Starbucks "sick tea" on my Pinterest profile under my Crafting Crossfit Mom Blog pin board:

Here is my Starbucks secret menu "sick tea" recreation

Honey
Lemonade
Water
1 large coffee mug ( it's about the size of a grande coffee or tea from Starbucks)

I found my coffee mug at target. I wanted a nice large mug to make my sick tea at home.
First I fill 2/3 of my mug up with fresh water. Then I add lemonade until the mug is full. (Left picture is the mug with fresh water/right picture shows the mug when the lemonade has been added)
Next I out the mug into the microwave for two minutes and thirty seconds. Once the water and lemonade is done heating. I add about 2 teaspoons of honey to the mug and stir it around (that's just a guess, I usually just squeeze a little honey into the mug, I've never actually measured it). Once the honey has dissolved into the hot water and lemonade mixture I add the calm and refresh tea bag into the water and lemonade mixture and let it sit for a few minutes and then it's ready to be enjoyed!!!
